Why Flat Shoes Are the Modern Bride’s Best Friend

Why Flat Shoes Are the Modern Bride’s Best Friend

By Leading International Wedding Planner: Charlotte Ricard-Quesada

When we think of bridal style, our minds often drift to towering heels, delicate straps, and the idea that elegance must come with a little discomfort. But after years of planning weddings and standing beside brides through every moment of their day, I can tell you this with complete certainty: the most confident, radiant brides are the ones who feel like themselves. And more often than not, that starts from the ground up.

Flat shoes, whether they are in the form of chic trainers or timeless ballet pumps, are no longer a “backup option.” They are a statement. A choice rooted in freedom, personality, and a quiet kind of luxury that prioritises feeling as good as you look.

A Shift in Bridal Mindset

Weddings have evolved. Today’s brides are less concerned with tradition for tradition’s sake and more focused on authenticity. They want to move, to dance, to hug every guest without thinking about sore feet or wobbling ankles. They want to be present.

This shift has opened the door to a new kind of bridal styling - one where flat shoes are not just accepted but celebrated.

Choosing flats is not about compromising elegance. It's about redefining it.

Trainers: Effortless Cool Meets Comfort

There is something undeniably modern about a bride in trainers. It speaks to confidence and individuality, a willingness to break from expectation and create a look that feels entirely her own.

Bridal trainers are no longer an afterthought. They are beautifully designed, often featuring soft satins, delicate embellishments, or clean minimalist lines that pair seamlessly with everything from structured gowns to relaxed silk slips.

But beyond aesthetics, they offer something invaluable: freedom.

Freedom to walk down cobbled streets without hesitation, freedom to dance for hours without needing a second pair of shoes, and the freedom to feel grounded and completely at ease.

I've seen brides light up the moment they change into trainers, but increasingly, many are choosing to start their day with them. And why not? Your wedding day is long. Comfort should not be reserved for the afterparty.

Ballet Pumps: Timeless, Feminine, and Understated

If trainers bring a contemporary edge, ballet pumps offer a softer, more classic alternative. They are the epitome of understated elegance - delicate, refined, and endlessly versatile.

Ballet flats work beautifully with traditional gowns, adding grace without overpowering the silhouette. They allow the dress to remain the focal point while still contributing to an overall polished look.

What I love most about ballet pumps is their quiet confidence. They don't demand attention, yet they elevate everything around them.

For brides who want:

A romantic, Parisian-inspired aesthetic
A seamless transition from ceremony to reception
A shoe they will wear again long after the wedding.

Ballet flats are an effortless choice.

The Reality of a Wedding Day

As a planner, I see the full picture. A wedding day is not a photoshoot, it’s an experience. It’s hours on your feet, moving between moments that you’ll want to fully enjoy without distraction.

Heels can be beautiful, but they often come with a trade-off. By the time the evening arrives, many brides are ready to kick them off.

Starting the day in flats removes that compromise entirely.

You're not counting down the minutes until you can change. You're not adjusting your posture or worrying about discomfort. You're simply present, engaged, and able to embrace every second.

Style Without Sacrifice

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that flats are less “bridal.” But bridal style is not defined by heel height. It’s defined by intention, by how everything comes together to reflect you.

With the right pair of flats, you lose nothing in terms of elegance. In fact, you often gain something far more powerful: authenticity.

Whether it's a sleek pair of trainers peeking out beneath a tailored suit or delicate ballet pumps complementing layers of tulle, flat shoes can enhance your look in a way that feels modern and effortless.

A New Kind of Luxury

True luxury, in my opinion, is comfort paired with beauty. It’s the ability to move through your day without restriction, knowing that every choice you’ve made supports how you want to feel.

Flat shoes embody this perfectly.

They allow you to:

Stay present in every moment
Move naturally and confidently
Dance, laugh and celebrate without limits
And ultimately, they let your personality shine through

My Advice to Brides

If you’re deciding between heels and flats, I encourage you to ask yourself one simple question: How do I want to feel on my wedding day?

If the answer is relaxed, confident, and completely yourself, then don't hesitate to embrace flats.

Whether you choose elegant ballet pumps or beautifully crafted trainers, know that you are not stepping away from tradition - you are stepping into a version of it that truly fits you.

And that is always the most stylish choice.
